Learn the Intricacies of New HIPAA Audit Program To Be In Compliance With the New Rule

After having a year of trail in 2012, HIPAA audit program is being restarted in 2014. The US Department of Health and Human Services reviewed the result of 2012 HIPAA audits and its end result is likely to act as a benchmark for future audits. The breach reports mentioned few areas of weakness that are the targets for the next round of audit questions, and HHS is now releasing requests for information to covered entities and business associates to establish their suitability to be audited.

Earlier, the audits had been performed only at entities that reported a breach or had a complaint filed against them. The new rule calls for audits irrespective of any complaint or breach. What does that mean?  It means that the HHS Office for Civil Rights (OCR) can show up at your door anytime to perform an audit on short notice. Plus, your organization is expected to respond in less than 15 business days. If this sounds daunting to you need not worry as the USDHHS has already published a set of guidelines used for the 2012 HIPAA audits to make it easier for you to prepare for an audit. You can refer to the questions asked at prior HIPAA compliance audits to prepare for potential HIPAA audit.

It’s better to be prepared for HIPAA audits beforehand because the new HIPAA rules have notably higher fines. Now for wilful neglect of compliance there is a minimum mandatory fine of $10,000. Plus, HIPAA enforcement has taken on a new precedence at HHS, and the officials have also openly stated the same. This makes preparing for an audit more important than ever before.

The procrastinating days are over! Do not let your organization go through the hassle of an audit untrained, learn the intricacies of New HIPAA Audit Program to be in compliance with the new rule. To help you deal with the preparations, expert HIPAA speaker Jim Sheldon-Dean is taking an audio session on HIPAA NEW Rules, where he is discussing the New HIPAA audit program and how it works in detail. Jim suggests that studying the areas that caused the most issues in the 2012 audits can be very helpful for organizations. Jim would be presenting this conference on behalf of AudioEducator.com, where he would explore what kind of issues and entities had the most problems, and share where the entities need to improve their compliance the most.
